Fox Apologizes, Settles Harassment Suit

When Gretchen Carlson claimed that Roger Ailes, the CEO of Fox News, sexually harassed the former Miss America, nobody saw this coming.

"We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve", 21st Century Fox says in part of that statement. Ms Carlson's lawsuit against Mr Ailes depicts a workplace where sexism was rampant, from Ailes's alleged ogling and innuendos to claims that Steve Doocy mocked her and treated her as a "blond female prop" on "Fox and Friends", where the two were hosts. She claimed she was demoted and let go because she rejected Ailes' sexual advances - and complained about workplace harassment.

Roger Ailes resigned amidst the allegations. Then his former employer stepped in to settle the lawsuit and also pony up the entire $20 million payout to keep confidential all the damaging information that Carlson had about Ailes and her time at the country's top-rated cable news channel.

"During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism", said 21st Century Fox in a statement.

Evangelist Franklin Graham reflected on his friendship with Greta Van Susteren and her "generous and gracious" character after the 14-year-veteran of Fox News abruptly announced she was leaving the network.

"I finally - after years of working in television - understand what it feels to be connected to a community", she said this morning on air. Brit Hume, the longtime political reporter will take over "On the Record". "The size of the settlement makes clear that she had a slam dunk case and yet her veracity was questioned publicly numerous times - and even when other women came forward", she said.

Fox News' standing as a news organization also made the parent company extremely sensitive to its public image, Rothstein said.

"There's no comparison between a man who gives consistently to Republican candidates in the re-election and a woman who is secretary of state who had her official staff that we pay for bartering for position and bartering for state dinners and just making contributions that are inappropriate", Conway said, referring to allegations that the State Department under Hillary Clinton gave improper preferential treatment to donors to the Clinton Foundation.

"It didn't appear it was getting better" after Ailes left, one of the sources said, so she looked to the exit. He said the timing of her departure with the announcement of the settlement with Carlson was a "coincidence".

Another former Fox commentator, Andrea Tantaros, has filed a harassment lawsuit against the network.

With Gretchen Carlson's sexual harassment suit settled this week, can we expect some action from OU?

Ailes was hired by Rupert Murdoch to create Fox News from scratch in 1996.

"I think it was a calculated
decision by the defendants to avoid discovery of things that would have proven embarrassing and a distraction from the news business", said Alan H. Crede, a Boston employment lawyer.
