Max-Q is a completely new approach to designing gaming laptops.
The GTX 1080 is already a very efficient graphics card but with Max-Q, Nvidia has found a way to optimise Pascal even further for higher peak efficiency, lower voltages and an optimised clock speed curve. On side note, 18mm is actually the thickness of MacBook Air, which in turn is not a gaming laptop.
Following hot on the heels of their new Battlebox lines - for the first time offering AMD Ryzen CPUs as part of the high-performance package - the new GeForce GTX Max-Q Design laptops follow a similar line for the laptop side of the gaming business. Nvidia is working with OEMs and system builders to make high-end gaming laptops thinner, faster and quieter. "WhisperMode intelligently paces the game's frame rate while simultaneously configuring the graphics settings for optimal power efficiency", the company said.

Huang introduced the new, slimline Asus Republic of Gamers laptop using the Max-Q Design ethos on stage at the Computex event, showing it running Project Cars 2 on battery at "60% more performance than the PlayStation 4 Pro.and it comes with a TV too", said Huang. Partners include Acer, Alienware, Asus, Clevo, Dream Machine, ECT, Gigabyte, Hasee, HP, LDLC, Lenovo, Maingear, MSI, Multicom, Origin PC, PC Specialist, Sager, and Scan. Nvidia points out that pricing, features and availability may vary. It's clear that NVIDIA wants to be more than just the add-in card leader, more than just the leader in computer graphics.
