BCCI forms four-member committee to finalise assistant coaches

The uncertainly in the world of cricket became evident once again after the Committee of Administrators (CoA) put on hold the appointment of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as consultants. "They have not been appointed", Rai told reporters here. A day after the CAC expressed hurt at allegations that the trio had foisted Zaheer and Dravid upon the team, TOI understands CAC and COA have reached an understanding over offering Zaheer a contract.

Earlier there were reports which said that Shastri was unhappy with the appointment of Zaheer as bowling coach as he wanted to bring his trusted man Arun for the job.

Yesterday, CAC member Ganguly said that Khan has been offered a contract of 150 days per season. "Also, we did inform you over the phone along with Rahul Johri (BCCI CEO) and Amitabh Choudhary of all that transpired immediately after the meeting was over". The support staff has been decided in consultation with the head coach.

The controversy over the appointment of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as overseas batting and bowling consultants took a new turn on Saturday with the BCCI.

There was no end to the controversy surrounding India cricket head coach appointment as even after Ravi Shastri was picked by CAC, there was drama surrounding the appointment of support staff. A COA member stressed that the CAC is recommendatory and the final decision related to the appointment of coaches and consultants lies with the Supreme Court-appointed committee.

Rai said, "Three appointments which are core to the coaching team have been decided". We have set up a committee and they will speak to them (CAC), communicate with them after talking to Shastri.

On the status of Dravid and Zaheer, he said, "It's not an appointment".

India already have Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar as its full-time batting and fielding coach respectively.

However, a Board official had wisely pointed the CAC had clearly exceeded its mandate by naming Dravid and Zaheer as part of the support staff when the three-member panel was only entrusted with the responsibility of naming the head coach after meeting the applicants. Those in the know say the uncertainty over the bowling coach/consultant is a carry-over effect of last year's coach selection episode where Ganguly is said to have played a big role in Kumble replacing Shastri.
