Netanyahu Opposes Syria Cease-Fire Deal Backed by US, Russia

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyah opposes the ceasefire agreement in Southern Syria reached between the USA and Russian Federation - which affects areas near the Golan - that went into effect last week, Israeli media reported Sunday.

Netanyahu joined French President Emmanuel Macron at a commemoration ceremony in Paris honoring French Jews who were deported during World War II.

It was a half century later when then-President Jacques Chirac became the first French leader to acknowledge the state's role in the Holocaust's horrors.

After Poland and the Netherlands, France has the highest number of people with the title of "Righteous Among the Nations", an honour given by Israel to non-Jews who helped Jews escape persecution during the Holocaust.

On July 16 and 17, 1942, French police officers rounded up more than 13,000 Jews at the Winter Stadium, or Velodrome d'Hiver.

While warning against the dangers of modern extremism, Mr. Netanyahu hailed the "great, great human beings" who had risked their lives to save Jews in France during Nazi occupation. Many deaths were not registered because on arrival at Birkenau, groups were sent directly from their trains to nearby gas chambers.

French expert on the Palestinian cause Jean-Paul Chagnollaud said that "France's stance is still somewhat vague on the matter".

"France is ready to support all diplomatic efforts towards this end within the parameters of peace recognised by the worldwide community", Macron said after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Time does its work", Macron said. "Militant Islam wants to destroy our common civilization". Anxious that Netanyahu is backing away from commitment to a two-state solution, Macron assailed Jewish settlement construction as a threat to worldwide hopes for peace. "You can't build pride on a lie", Macron said on Sunday.

"We will never surrender to the messages of hate; we will not surrender to anti-Zionism because it is a reinvention of anti-Semitism", he pledged at the event attended by Benjamin Netanyahu. Vichy was definitely not all French people it was the government and the administration of France. "We must stand against them together".

Netanyahu and Macron were due to hold face to face talks at the Élysée Palace, where French media said they would discuss Syria, Iran and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
