Pahlaj Nihalani sacked as Censor board chief, Prasoon Joshi to replace him

Nihalani was appointed as the chairperson of the CBFC on January 19, 2015. In fact, a few days after Union Cabinet Minister for Textiles Smriti Irani being given additional charge of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry rumours were rife that one of three national award-winning filmmakers - Prakash Jha, Madhur Bhandarkar or Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi - would replace Nihalani.

Joshi known for his memorable songs in Bollywood films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Taare Zameen Par.

Hollywood films that drew Nihalani's ire included "50 Shades of Grey", which was not cleared for release despite over 90 cuts, the James Bond-film Spectre, which had a kissing scene cut, and more recently Charlize Theron-starrer Atomic Blonde, which had a lesbian lovemaking scene chopped.

Reports now suggest that Nihalani will be replaced by Prasoon Joshi. Nahlani had come under fire for his excessive political posturing - he even went so far as to call Narendra Modi his "action hero".

So, when the news of his appointment as the new chief of Central Board Of Film Certification, CBFC, was announced, film fans erupted in joy. After all, things were becoming a little too messy with the chopping and censoring of things that shouldn't be chopped or censored in the first place. Vociferous protests following his decision to recommend 89 cuts in "Udta Punjab", besides demanding that the reference to the state be removed.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Raza Murad told Mirror Now, "Whatever has been done will be welcomed by the industry".

With the advent of Prasoon Joshi, many film-makers will breathe a sign of relief. "He is a wellknown lyricist working in the Hindi film industry and has headed a large advertising agency. So his understanding of the medium is very good". "Prasoon, Vidya and I are on the same page". "He understands today's movies well". Shola Aur Shabnam, Dil Tera Deewana, Aankhen and Andaaz are some of the blockbusters he has produced.
