10-year-old girl gives birth after being raped and refused abortion

The reason given was that the family had asked the court for the abortion in the 26th week of pregnancy but the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act states abortions can only be performed up to 20 weeks.

A 10-year-old girl who became pregnant after she was raped in India has given birth.

Dr. Dasari Harish said in a statement, "The minor girl delivered a baby through C-section this morning".

'The infant's weight is 2.2 kg and it has been admitted to neo natal ICU.

India's Supreme Court denied her the opportunity to have an abortion because it claimed that the pregnancy was far too advanced.

The apex court had earlier said it would not go into the orders of the high court which had held that the medical boards report has stated that it would be unsafe for the life of the petitioner and there was a compelling responsibility of the state to keep the child alive. She had been repeatedly raped, allegedly by her uncle, who has been arrested. The girl's pregnancy was only discovered recently after her parents took her to hospital when she complained of stomach pain.

The case reached the Supreme Court, where it was ultimately rejected.

The 8 class student had taken a shortcut to school through the children traffic park in Chandigarh's sector 23 where a man stopped her, took her to one side and raped her.

Her doctor told CNN the girl didn't know she was pregnant.

Indian law prohibits medical termination of pregnancies after 20 weeks except when the mother's life is at risk.

A child under 16 is raped every 155 minutes in India, according to Unicef statistics.
