2 dead in small plane crash near OR eclipse viewing site

A small plane that early reports indicated had departed from the Bay Area crashed Saturday in central OR, killing the two people on board.

"A reservation tied to the plane for two persons to stay in the local area originally suggested that the pilot and a passenger were on board", Adkins said in a statement.

Jefferson County Emergency Manager Mark Carman confirmed the plane went down approximately one mile south of the Madras Airport runway, the plane's original destination.

Closer to the crash on Northwest Burch Lane, pieces of a white plane were seen on one side of Willow Creek Canyon, a steep and seemingly rocky terrain with vegetation sprinkled throughout the area.

The FAA says the single engine home-built plane crashed on approach to the Madras Airport in Oregon.

Many people are in Madras for viewing Monday's total solar eclipse as the town is in the path of totality.

A small fire resulting from the crash was extinguished, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Around 200,000 individuals are normal in the territory that is viewed as a prime survey spot as the moon totally scratches out the sun.
