The government had earlier said that it had no problem with the NIA probe. The women, however, said that they were not married as yet even after conversion to Islam.

The Kerala government which is involved in a bitter battle of war of words with the Centre has vehemently opposed NIA probe in the Love Jihad case.

The government told the top court that the claims made by the National Investigation Agency that there was a "pattern" in the way religious conversions were taking place in Kerala were false. She was also reportedly influenced by Muslim friends.

The central agency is scrutinising over 30 cases in Kerala where Hindu women were allegedly lured, forced to convert to Islam and marry Muslim men.

As told by a source, the other woman had eloped with a Muslim man and converted herself to Islam to the nuptial knot with him. The court has not given its judgement on the validity of the woman's marriage, though it wondered whether the high court had the power to annul the marriage, and the case has been adjourned.

Considering the habeas corpus petition filed by one Anees Hameed from Kannur district, seeking the release of his wife Sruthi Meledath from her family's custody, Kerala High Court on Tuesday warned against the indiscriminate use of "love-jihad" as an excuse to break up inter-religious couples.

The state police have referred over 94 inter-faith marriage cases to NIA. The agency said in the Nambiar case, it was alleged that Sainaba, president of women's wing of Popular Front of India, hatched a conspiracy along with 11 people to trap Nambiar.

He said this while criticising the Pinarayi Vijayan led LDF government for stating in the Supreme Court that a controversial Muslim marriage case in the state did not warrant a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe.

Christian Help Line of Kochi, submitted that more than 1,500 Christian girls were converted to Islam through "love jihad" till date.
