Tamagotchi is back: Virtual pet phenomenon returning for 20th anniversary

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tamagotchi Virtual Pet, Tamagotchi have today started taking preorders for the new limited edition Tamagotchi Virtual Pets that are equipped with a 16 x 16 pixel screen and is available priced at $15.

Bandai America is bringing Tamagotchi back to the U.S. this November, and you can preorder a digital toy pet starting Tuesday for $15 at various North American retailers.

Yes, the new Tamagotchi looks very much like the original, including the device's egg shape, with six different designs pulled from the original Japanese launch. Hopefully that will change as the day wears on, because if you're a big fan like the rest of us, you've gotta get that new Tamagotchi! The packaging design is the same as the original. "It's not just homework and sports now".

"For many Generation X kids, the Tamagotchi device can be considered America's first and favourite digital pet", says Tara Badie, marketing director for Bandai America.

".Those late-20, early-30-year-olds, they loved the product the first time".

The intention for the simpler play style was because Bandai is hoping the new line will appeal to kids who played with Tamagotchi back in the '90s and who know have their own, full lives to deal with.

Since its initial debut, the company said it's sold over 82 million Tamagotchis globally. All six have the classic pixelated LCD display - an especially tiny one - and present a little creature that needs to be taken care of to prevent death.

The new Tamagotchi line is now available for preorder ahead of its November 5 release.
