Defence sources told Spanish newspaper ABC the pilot "would have been unable to eject" although there is yet no official confirmation about his fate.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Defence, the accident happened as the fighter plane was taking off from the Torrejon de Ardoz airbase in the outskirts of Madrid this morning (Tuesday).
Everything points to an engine failure being the cause of the accident as eyewitnesses explained how the F-18 travelled nearly the entire length of the 4.2 km runway at Torrejon airbase, on the outskirts of Madrid, before lifting off the ground, turning slightly to the right and crashing around 100 meters further on.
Another jet fighter belonging to the Spanish military crashed last Thursday after an air display to mark the country's national day. The Defense Ministry later identified the pilot as Lt. Fernando Pérez Serrano, 26, from Murcia.
The cause of crash of plane was announced that investigation into accident was not yet known.
