Aguilera whipped through several tunes from The Bodyguard, including "I Will Always Love You" and Houston's cover of "I'm Every Woman", which became a feminist anthem in the early 1990s.
Christina Aguilera hit something of a bum note with her much-hyped Whitney Houston tribute at today's American Music Awards - and one former musical rival stole the show with an instantly viral reaction shot. She started a slow tempo before getting the audience involved in her high-energy rendition of the empowering track.
Here's Pink, shaking her head at Aguilera's stylings.
"We grew up and we hugged it out", she said.
Twenty-five years after The Bodyguard came out, Christina Aguilera has honored the film's momentous accomplishments - the soundtrack is the best selling movie album of all time - as well as its late star, Whitney Houston.
Whoo! We're impressed she even got through all that!
Seeing that everyone was talking about her reaction, Pink quickly tweeted support for Christina after the performance, saying, "Christina f***ing killed it tonight for one of our favorite singers ever". Several people took issue with the fact Aguilera, a white woman, performed the tribute. I feel eternally fortunate to have personally met her on and off the stage.
Although the crowd at the AMAs seemed to be all-in on Aguilera's performance, Twitter users were divided: While some were brought to tears by her impressive pipes, others claimed that Houston would not have approved of the tribute.
