Deputy Eric Overall, a 22-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was struck by the fleeing suspect's vehicle at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of southbound M-15 at Seymour Lake Road.
The deputy was deploying devices meant to disable a vehicle, called 'stop sticks, ' near his sheriff's patrol auto, when he was struck by the suspect's vehicle, which subsequently rolled over.
The suspect, who was arrested at the scene, is a 22-year-old man from Macomb Township.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard announced the deputy's death in a statement.
The chase began in the parking lot of the Lapeer County Jail and continued onto westbound I-69 and then to southbound M-15, police said. It then entered Oakland County in Brandon Township.
Overall, who lived in Genesee County, was recently married and has one adult son, police said. He has four prior convictions for possession of marijuana and resisting and obstructing police.
The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death a homicide, determining Overall died of blunt force trauma, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in a statement. And he was "well off the roadway" when the driver swerved to hit him, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
"Walled Lake Schools is grateful for many years of service from Deputy Overall".
