Clemson and Alabama will meet in the College Football Playoffs semifinals on January 1 in Allstate Sugar Bowl, giving New Orleans a rematch of the national championship games of the past two years.
Ohio State claimed a Big Ten title on Saturday night, taking down previously-fourth-ranked Wisconsin - which was the last undefeated Power 5-conference team - to give it two victories over teams ranked in the Top 5. Nick provided some details on the status of key Alabama football players for the semi-final Playoff game.
The Crimson Tide will face No. 1 Clemson in the AllState Sugar Bowl. Nick Saban also has a 2004 Sugar Bowl win that led to an LSU 2003 national championship.
"And at that time, Alabama hadn't won a National Championship - it's not like now, they win it like every year or every other year with Coach Saban", Swinney continued.
"Because we didn't finish the season the way we wanted to finish and didn't play like we like to play or to the standard that we like to play to, we put our fate in someone else's hands", Saban said.
No. 4 Alabama will play No. 1 Clemson on Jan 1 at 7:45 CT in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on ESPN.
Not that Clemson is a piece of cake to stop with first-year starting quarterback Kelly Bryant, but Alabama may actually have a chance to hold the Tigers under 500 yards total offense now than DeShaun Watson moved on to the NFL's Houston Texans.
Saban suggested the three injured Crimson Tide linebackers who returned for the Iron Bowl - outside backers Christian Miller and Terrell Lewis along with inside backer Mack Wilson - will be healthy and available on New Year's Day against Clemson.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is excited to participate in his first Sugar Bowl since he was a receiver on the Tide's 1992 national championship team that upset Miami in the 1993 Sugar Bowl. I felt we were one of those teams, and we were certainly pleased and happy things worked out the way they did. I mean, like I said earlier in the year, if we had the same team back, but we've got a different team. He implored the committee to look at the entire season, and not just the Crimson Tide's lone loss.
"People don't realize, we got a bunch of motivated individuals. It's not exactly like we'd like for it to be and we feel very fortunate that we have the opportunity to be in the game".
