Amazon Singapore launch Prime membership

Amazon launched its members programme Prime Now in Singapore which will allow access to benefits like fast shipping, streaming, and gaming.

According to Amazon, for this week, Singapore customers who are Prime members get to enjoy exclusive access to free two-hour delivery on orders over S$40. They will also enjoy access to gaming benefits with Twitch Prime, at no additional cost.

To encourage sign ups the Singapore Prime membership advertised at $8.99 per month will be reduced to $2.99 for a limited time, although Amazon haven't yet indicated how long the discount will last.

The launch of Amazon Prime comes just after the company ended its Free AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping option to Singapore on Monday, which enabled shoppers here to get free global shipping with a minimum order of US$125. This is just the beginning.

The Prime launch, a first in Southeast Asia, will see Amazon expanding its reach in the region even as Chinese rival Alibaba already sells merchandise from its online Taobao stores through a regional e-commerce subsidiary, Lazada. However, the delivery services are more stable now, and product categories and options have both been enlarged.

Jamil Ghani, Vice President of Amazon Prime International said that Singapore Prime members can expect more added benefits in the future. These are unique offerings that Amazon can provide to the market that its local competitors do not yet provide, she added. "In addition, with the attractive loyalty program offerings and promotions that Amazon is offering, consumers will be willing to give Amazon another shot", said Wang.

Now that they have made it accessible for Singaporeans, members get to watch shows on its award-winning Amazon Prime Originals like the highly-anticipated second season of The Grand Tour, which will premiere on 8 December. Members also receive a Twitch channel subscription every 30 days, as well as ad-free viewing, an expanded set of chat emotes and colors, and an exclusive chat badge, all available at twitch.amazon.com/prime.

However, this does mean the previously free Prime Now service is gone, and users will have to subscribe to Prime if they even want to make a purchase locally, unlike local rivals Redmart and Honestbee, which do not require a subscription to order products such as diapers or groceries. For a limited time, customers can join Prime at an introductory promotional price of S$2.99 per month ahead of the S$8.99 monthly price. Customer reviews, 1-Click shopping, personalized recommendations, Prime, Fulfillment by Amazon, AWS, Kindle Direct Publishing, Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV, Amazon Echo, and Alexa are some of the products and services pioneered by Amazon.
