Giants' Eli Manning reacts to being named starting quarterback

That's when Gruden said he might actually be interested in the job, but with one catch: The Giants would have to keep Eli Manning.

Manning had his streak of 210 consecutive starts end last week.

While there are no guarantees at the moment, Manning said in a WFAN radio interview that he spoke with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who will take over the interim head coaching role, and told him he wanted to start Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, that he wants to lead the team to victory in its final four games. After getting his starting job back on Wednesday, Manning sounded like he was ready to forgive and forget his benching, if that meant he could be a Giant for life.

He recognizes he may be asked to sit again so rookie Davis Webb can be evaluated.

Webb, 22, Reese's third-round pick out of Cal in April, is smart and hard-working and talented and conducts himself like a professional and acts like a future franchise quarterback.

So Eli Manning knows he could be here today, gone tomorrow. "I think it was a couple of weeks already too late". He had hoped to finish his career with Manning and the Giants.

Webb also is now in an awkward position: the GM and coach who drafted him were fired on Monday, and now a new general manager and head coach will arrive likely holding a top-three pick in next spring's draft, in position to take a top college QB.

"I don't want to leave the Giants". Former Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz said Tuesday on The Michael Kay Show on 98.7 ESPN New York that he would be attending Sunday's game in a No. 10 jersey, although the plan has seemed to fizzle out with Manning having been reinserted into the lineup. I love my job. He had such a command over his players, and we loved him.

But you want to play?

Nearly every other key contributor or starter stayed healthy, with Darian Thompson, who certainly isn't a game-changer by any means (just yet, at least), being the "biggest" name placed on Injured Reserve.

"I'll take the under on that if Eli comes back", Gruden said.

"Well, we're going to compete, we're going to work hard, we're trying to go beat the Dallas Cowboys".

He will be 37 next month.

"Three more years, two more years, I don't know", Manning said.

"What you have to understand is that when I was coaching just the defense, I have the blinders on and all I'm anxious about is just the defense. So, all the former teammates that sent me text messages that voiced their opinions on things, even some players that I just met over the years, the text messages and their support was very helpful and I appreciate that a lot".

Tears welled in his eyes when he revealed this story told him by his sister-in-law.

It's clear the 36-year-old quarterback has regressed a bit in recent years, but with weapons like Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and even Brandon Marshall, there was no conceivable reason for the Giants offense to struggle the way it did.

"I feel for Coach McAdoo, he's been a great coach for me, a great friend".
