Israel Defense Forces strike Gaza Strip after Hamas rocket attack

"The IDF sees the terror organization Hamas as responsible for events in the Gaza Strip".

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade warned travellers heading to Jordan, Israel, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank there may be widespread protests over the move by the Trump administration. An IDF spokesman said two rocket launches had been identified with both falling inside the Gaza Strip.

It's not yet clear if there were any casualties in either attack.

The rocket fire followed several clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli forces along the Gaza border earlier in the day, in which at least nine Gazans were injured, according to the local health ministry.

Militants fired on Thursday makeshift rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel in response to US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, eyewitnesses said.

Hamas Leader Ismail Hanniyeh issued a call for Palestinian across the country to begin a new intifada.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry said the United States move to "modify the historic status of Jerusalem violates the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people". "Large protests are likely, particularly after Friday prayers, and could result in violence".

Under Egyptian mediation, the factions have sought to end a schism dating back to 2007, when Islamist Hamas seized Gaza in a civil war with Abbas's Fatah.
