The Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 is heralded as one of the most convincing victories of the annals of the military history. In a joint statement issued by the GoC-in-C and Bangladesh's Minister Engineer Hossain yesterday, it was stated that, both nations are eternally indebted to the valour and courage of the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini, who jointly fought and overcame the tyranny and terror unleashed by the Pakistani Forces and gave birth to Bangladesh. But this day is very important to every single person from Bangladesh.After 9 months of struggle we got our own identity on this very day in 1971.

The Battle of Hilli or the Battle of Bogra was a major battle fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and Bangladesh Liberation War. To cease these, the Pakistan government ordered the army to suppress them.

In Pakistan's 1970 general elections, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was a prominent leader in East Pakistan won the elections.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Army chief General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives the 1971 war.

It was the third war between India and Pakistan after 1947 and 1965 war.

India immediately recognised Bangladesh and provided it strong military action.

When war was officially declared after Pakistani air strikes on Indian airbases in the west on December 3, Indian PM Indira Gandhi and her Army Chief Sam Manekshaw were well prepared.

Soon in March, 1971, the Pakistani military began a crackdown on the people form West Bengal which later turned into a genocide.

The minister expressed gratitude to India for its tremendous support extended by its people and government in 1971.
