Ranchi Police assures probe into Lalu's aides serving him in jail

"Lalu is in jail to save his illegally acquired wealth".

A row has erupted following media reports that two "personal aides" of Lalu Prasad Yadav were sent to a Ranchi prison to "serve" him, hours before the Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo was lodged there after being convicted in a fodder scam case, drawing criticism from rival Janata Dal-United.

He was on bail in the first case when he was convicted and sentenced in the second.

Seeking leniency because the Makar Sankranti festival was around the corner, on Sunday, "We celebrate it in a grand way.by eating dahi churra", Lalu Yadav said, trying to be his persuasive best.

Akhtar, however, rejected the allegations and claimed that he was not on duty on the day, when the call was reportedly made to the judge. Presently, Lalu is lodged inside the Birsa Munda jail.

"This shows that Lalu Prasad's commitment to social justice is a sham and he cares only for himself and his family members", Kumar, a JD-U member of legislative council, said. "They also stole Rs 10,000 from my shirt's pocket" Sumit Yadav said in his FIR against Madan Yadav and Mahto.

Lalu Prasad was sentenced to three-and-a-half year's imprisonment on offences of cheating, along with criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The FIR against Mahto and Madan Yadav was registered by their neighbour Sumit Yadav in Lower Bazaar police station, alleging that he was beaten up and robbed. But Madan Yadav and Lakshman Mahto got into the same jail two hours before the RJD chief walked in on December 23, said police sources. The case relates to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 35 crore and 62 lakh from the Chaibasa treasury in the 1990s when RJD chief Lalu Prasad was the chief minister.

Special CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh had on Saturday sentenced him to three-and-a-half years in jail in the case relating to illegal withdrawal of Rs 9 million from Deoghar treasury.
