Trump recalled making an appearance on one of Winfrey's shows. "In 2011, I told some jokes about our current president at the White House Correspondents Dinner - jokes about how he was unqualified to be president - and some have said that night convinced him to run". "I've been processing the accounts of Harvey Weinstein's disgusting behavior and haven't been able to find the words to articulate the magnitude of the situation", she wrote at the time.
Winfrey is following some of the conventions adopted by career politicians, particularly the idea that some of her confidants have been urging her to run.
But Trump said Tuesday he doesn't think she will ultimately put her name in the ring.
Winfrey was a popular surrogate for President Obama. "Is she a successful individual?" Best known as the host of her multi-award-winning talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show", which ended in 2011, Winfrey is also the founder of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Many actors and actresses wore black for the Golden Globes to protest sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.
"It's up to the people", Graham told The Los Angeles Times. "She would absolutely do it".
A White House spokesman said Monday the Trump team would welcome Winfrey's candidacy, or that of anyone else.
"We welcome the challenger, whether it be Oprah Winfrey or anybody else", Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley told reporters aboard Air Force One.
"I do think she's intrigued by the idea". He even said he would love to have her as his running mate. She wasn't thinking in those terms.
"These candidates who are coming forward today only have this popular appeal", he said. So she knew that she wanted to say something significant.
"I like Oprah", he said.
Winfrey, a billionaire media mogul, hasn't commented on whether she would mount a campaign.
"Which brings me to this: What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have".
