Passengers escape horrific plane crash in Turkey

Everyone on board was evacuated safely, provincial governor Yucel Yavuz said.

A passenger plane skidded off a runway and down the side of a cliff at an airport in northern Turkey.

The cause of the incident was not known and an investigation is under way.

An airplane wound up in a perilous position after skidding of the runway into the mud after landing in the Turkish province of Trabzon early on Sunday.

Photographs from the scene showed the plane, which departed from the Turkish capital of Ankara on Saturday evening, stuck in the frozen mud.

The airport was closed until 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT; 12 a.m. EST).
