Big Little Lies season 2 will introduce Streep's character as the mother of Alexander Skarsgard's character from season 1, which makes her the mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman's character Celeste Wright. Andrea Arnold will direct all seven of the new episodes, which are slated to premiere in 2019.

It will be based on a short story by Liane Moriarty, the author who wrote the Big Little Lies novel that the first season was adapted from.
The description for season two of the show reads: "The subversive, darkly comedic drama Big Little Lies will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode ... the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom".
