Fiorentina's Davide Astori is farewelled by thousands at his funeral in Florence

Fiorentina paid tribute to their captain Davide Astori ahead of their first match without him following the Italian defender's tragic death at the age of just 31.

Astori died suddenly last week after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest at the team's hotel ahead of their Serie A match against Udinese, which was subsequently postponed.

"The Gigliati's" are entertaining Benevento in the league, and, naturally, it was an emotional occasion with Astori on the mind of everyone inside the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

After the entire football weekend was postponed, Serie A is back in action with Fiorentina beating Benevento 1-0 at home.

Fiorentina midfielder Marco Benassi is sure "Davide Astori was on the field with us today and I like to think he helped Vitor Hugo's leap".

The breakthrough came in the 25th minute courtesy of Vitor Hugo, the man who replaced Astori in the Viola line-up and scored his first ever goal for the Florence outfit. Astori's number thirteen shirt has been retired by the club in his honour.

Both teams hit the post in the final minutes, through Massimo Coda and new Fiorentina captain Milan Badelj.
