Trump floats idea of creating a 'Space Force'

America should create its own separate military space force, President Donald Trump mentioned in an offhand remark Tuesday that would change the course of US space policy. How about the Space Force instead? And some said a military space force may make it harder to keep Earth's orbit a place of peace.

The proposed Space Corps would have functioned like the Marine Corps does within the US Navy; it would have been responsible for overseeing all of the Air Force's operations in space.

"So think of that, Space Force, because we are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in, tremendous", the President said. President Donald Trump wants a 'space force'.

Trump didn't make clear what shape this "space force" might take and what adversaries it would confront. "And I was not really serious, and then I said what a great idea, maybe we'll have to do that".

Trump insinuated that the idea started off as joke, but that he might seriously be considering it.

The President's remarks come after a Republican plan to create a "Space Corps" as part of the Air Force was dropped from the National Defence Authorisation Act in November.

According to Gizmodo, despite Trump taking full credit for the suggestion, military leaders past year said space is the next war frontier (as they were requesting funding).

Which branch of the United States military would you like to enlist in?

Defense Secretary James Mattis even took the rare step of writing a letter supporting an amendment to remove the Space Corps from the House's version of policy bill earlier this year. It's unclear if Trump's Space Force would be any similar to what the Space Crops was meant to be.
