With AP Photos. The Denver Broncos are hoping to repeat the success they had with Peyton Manning in pursuing another free-agent fix at quarterback.
Quarterback Case Keenum is reportedly expected to sign with the Denver Broncos when free agency officially opens on Wednesday. Denver decided against committing to the player-friendly Kirk Cousins contract structure, shifted quickly to Keenum. Keenum and the Vikings earned the No. 2 seed and advanced to the NFC Championship following a last-second touchdown pass from Keenum to Stefon Diggs in an NFC Divisional Round game against the Saints. Cousins is now deciding between the Vikings, the New York Jets and the Arizona Cardinals, Schefter reported. After reaching the peak of Super Bowl 50 two years ago, the Broncos have sunk on the heels of two playoffless seasons.
The Kirk Cousins sweepstakes is now down to three teams.. The 30-year-old quarterback started 14 games and set career marks in 2017 after playing sparingly for the Texans and Rams during his five prior National Football League seasons.
Keenum, who has also had unsuccessful stints with the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams, went 11-3 in the regular season as a starter for the Vikings, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns with just seven interceptions.
That included choosing among the draft prospects that include Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and others. "When you get opportunities like this, you've got to take advantage of them, so we're going to take advantage of it".
Keenum played in two fewer games than Cousins previous year and finished just 546 yards behind the former Washington quarterback. This figure and the term of the contract - unlike with Cousins - should not preclude the Broncos from drafting a quarterback fifth overall if they choose to go in that direction.
