Earlier, Manu Kumar Jain, Vice President of Xiaomi and Managing Director of Xiaomi India had tweeted that the company sold 1 million units of the Redmi 5A entry-level smartphone in less than a month. The sale will be exclusively through Amazon India. Xiaomi has been posting teasers about the new upcoming smartphone using the hashtag CompactPowerhouse.
To recall, the Redmi 5 was first launched in China in December past year alongside the Redmi 5 Plus. The launch of Xiaomi Redmi 5 was confirmed by the brand on March 13 and just like their previous smartphone launches, Xiaomi will be live streaming the unveiling of their much-awaited smartphone on their official website.
Buyers can also buy Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro offline through Mi Home stores and Xiaomi partner stores across India.
Redmi Note 5 Pro is available in four colour options including Black, Gold, Rose Gold, and Lake Blue.
Although Xiaomi hasn't officially revealed which device is being launched Wednesday, the upcoming smartphone is in all likelihood the Redmi 5. Apart from this, the live stream is also likely to be available on the official Xiaomi India YouTube channel and Facebook page. The Redmi 5 runs on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1 Nougat.
The Redmi 5 is equipped with 5.7-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio, 720x1440p resolution and 282ppi pixel density.
In the camera department, the Redmi 5 comes with a 12-megapixel rear sensor that has features like f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and LED flash.
In China, Redmi 5 was launched in three variants: 2GB RAM+16GB storage, 3GB RAM+32GB storage and 4GB RAM+32GB storage. In India, Redmi 5 is expected to slot in between the entry-level Redmi 5A and the Redmi Note 5. While the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage model of Redmi 5 was priced at CNY 899 which comes approx around Rs 8,800. The front-snapper also features the company's proprietary Beautify 3.0. It will also come equipped with a 12MP rear camera along with a 5MP front-facing camera.
The dual-SIM handset is backed by a 4,000mAh non-removable battery with fast charging.
