Russian Federation is likely to call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss US, British and French air strikes on Syria, one of its lawmakers says. And the three allies are considering a joint military strike in retaliation. Russian officials denied any involvement during the most violent days of the fighting between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine in 2014, while journalists and Western intelligence agencies reported tanks pouring across the Russian border into the Ukraine.
Late Friday night, the U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S., United Kingdom and France jointly launched strikes targeting the Assad regime's chemical weapons capabilities after a suspected chemical attack killed dozens outside of Damascus.
"All nations and all people will be harmed if we allow Assad to normalize the use of chemical weapons".
Russia's foreign ministry said Syria had been attacked just as it had a chance for peace. "It would provoke a retaliation operation by government forces and the White Helmets were to use it to stage a provocation with an alleged use of chemical weapons", he said.
"Before we took action, the United States communicated with the Russian Federation to reduce the danger of any Russian or civilian casualties", Huntsman said.
A first team of experts from the global Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has arrived in Syria, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. Trump had dialled down the rhetoric on Thursday. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!"
The capture of Douma has clinched a major victory for Assad, crushing what was once a centre of the insurgency near Damascus, and underlines his unassailable position in the war. Trump asked, adding the two countries are "most responsible for supporting, equipping and financing the criminal Assad regime".
