Russian envoy warns of 'consequences' after US-led strikes on Syria

"Without the sanction of the UN Security Council, in breach of the UN charter and the norms and principles of global law, an act of aggression was committed against a sovereign state", the Kremlin said.

The current escalation of the situation in Syria "has a destructive effect on the whole system of global relations", the Kremlin said.

Russia's defence ministry said on Saturday that the majority of missiles fired during the overnight attack on Syria by U.S., British and French forces were intercepted by Syrian government air defence systems, TASS news agency reported.

Putin said the US actions in Syria made the humanitarian catastrophe worse and caused pain for civilians. Russia views the military strikes against Syria as an act of aggression and a declaration of war on a sovereign state, Sherin said, according to Russian news agency Sputnik.

Russian Federation had "refused" supplying those missiles to Syria a few years ago, he added, "taking into account the pressing request of some of our Western partners".

Russia's foreign ministry said that Western strikes on Syria came as the country had "a chance of a peaceful future".

"Not one of the cruise missiles released by the U.S. and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of Russian air defences protecting facilities in Tartus and Hmeimim", the ministry said in a statement carried by the RIA Novosti state news agency, referring to the locations of Russia's naval facility in Tartus and its Hmeimim air base.

"It is necessary to consider not only deliveries of missile defense systems, but also deliveries accompanied by those people who can train the personnel of these countries, so that Syria, Iran and North Korea could deploy these systems, if they wanted", Sherin said.
