Sunday marks five years since Boston Marathon bombing

Hasay, third in the race previous year, was advised by her doctor and team on Sunday that she needed more time to recover fully so there would be no long-term injury, the marathon said in a statement.

The city of Boston has held a moment of silence on the fifth anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing.

And on the eve of the 2018 marathon, the mayor believes the tragedy has united the city.

"Her doctor and team have made the decision that Jordan needs to take time to recover fully so there is no long-term injury", the statement said, adding that officials support Hasay's decision and invite her to return to Boston in 2019.

A runner is escorted from the scene after explosions went off at the Boston Marathon, April 15, 2013.

The cloud on Hasey's horizon, however, is that she has reportedly been suffering from a foot injury.

Hasay crushed the American record for a marathon debut by nearly three minutes at Boston previous year.

Although Huddle's time in her marathon debut was on 2:28:13 she has the competitive temperament to make her second attempt at the distance even more memorable.

The Kirui-Rupp rematch figures to be a great one on the men's side.

Kirui also won the world marathon crown with Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola second and boasting a 2:04:06 clocking from Dubai in January, where he was third.Ethiopians Lelisa Desisa, the 2013 and 2015 Boston champion, and Lemi Berhanu, the 2016 Boston victor, could also threaten for the title.

The fastest man in the field, however, is Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola, second behind Kirui at last summer's World Championships, who set a personal best of 2:04:06 in January at the Dubai Marathon.
