Athletics' Piscotty homers in first at-bat since mother's funeral

It was his third home run of the season and put Oakland up 3-0. The gesture was a tribute to his mother, Gretchen Piscotty, who passed away on May 6 after battling ALS for almost one year.

Piscotty's close relationship with Gretchen has been chronicled throughout recent weeks. "The hand over my heart, that's something my mom would do when she wasn't able to speak", Piscotty said the next day. "I'm going to keep that with me".

But in his first at-bat back with the team after her celebration of life, Piscotty launched a solo home run off Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez and touched his heart after he crossed home plate.

Piscotty didn't receive the same reaction in the away stadium as he had two days after Gretchen's death, when the fans and players alike lifted him up with a standing ovation as the A's played the Astros in Oakland.

Andrew Benintendi homered for Boston and Mitch Moreland finished with a pair of doubles for the Red Sox.

Mengden improved to 3-4 on the season, lowering his ERA to 3.75.

Added Melvin: "To hit a home run in his first at-bat like that, there's something in the air".

The start of Tuesday's game was delayed an hour and 42 minutes by a brief but nasty story that included high winds, pounding rain and thunder and lightning.
