While Pogba hasn't enjoyed any major worldwide success similar to that of Petit's, Didier Deschamps' side do remain one of the favourites in Russian Federation.
But Sagna does not believe the criticism is justified.
With France's squad being packed full of midfield talent, Pogba will not be gifted a spot in the side and he will instead have to fight hard to make sure he stays ahead in the pecking order over the likes of Corentin Tolisso and Steven N'Zonzi.
"To me a holding midfield player is there to protect the team and to defend first".
'Every time he is angry, every time he has this anger inside of him and he wants to show people are wrong, I know I want this guy'.
Still only 25, Pogba has already made 54 global appearances, while he has also experienced playing in finals at club level with Juventus and United.
"He can deal with the pressure and he is maybe going to remove the pressure off the other players because some of the players are very young, they are only 19 or 20", the former Arsenal and Manchester City full-back added.
But Deschamps dismissed such concerns, saying the 31-year-old will be between the posts when France play Australia in their opening Group C fixture on Saturday.
