Danny Welbeck began his pre-season work on Monday after enjoying a break following his exploits at the World Cup with England but he's still short of match practice so won't be considered against City. "I want to be together with the supporters to start a new way with the same players, also some new players, and with a new coach and new staff".

Emery said: "It's clear, the aim for the club is to arrive as champions, play for titles".

Arsenal have reportedly told Danny Welbeck that he would be surplus to requirements this season under Unai Emery and have instructed his agent to find a new club for the forward.

The new manager confirmed that Laurent Koscielny, now out injured, would be his main captain, but that he would be backed up by Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka. "It's important for us to show that this is a new way, a new process, which involves everybody from the new players, to the new coach, to the new staff".

"I met the Kroenke family in Atlanta and he gave us his commitment in this project with Arsenal", the Spaniard added. Together I think we can improve, to win in our way. But then also we need to build [a mentality] and it isn't a thing you find quickly. The same when we are thinking defensively, I want our strikers to be thinking: "We need to protect the goalkeepers".

"The other players are OK and we are working on the possibility to work with Ainsley, who has experience in this [left-back] position. I am going to decide tomorrow [Saturday] on the first 11, but Ainsley is the player who started the last match against Lazio".
