The government of Scotland announced that the milestone was reached after 120 refugees arrived last week, but said that the number was "tiny compared with the people in desperate need". Families settled on the Isle of Bute off the country's west coast came forward to praise the local community after newspaper reports that some of them were feeling isolated and ashamed of accepting charity.

The UK aims to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years. "The administration should capitalize on the momentum they've built in recent months to speed up the admissions process by significantly increasing the target number of Syrian refugee admissions for the year ahead".

About 20,000 people displaced by the conflict in the Middle East will be resettled in the United Kingdom by the end of 2020, with around 2000 expected to find new homes in Scotland. David O'Neill, president of council body Cosla, said: "Councils and communities have made incredible efforts to ensure a smooth welcome for our friends from Syria".
