The UK's National Cyber Security Centre, the organisation tasked with keeping the UK's critical infrastructure safe from cyber attacks, warned that a second wave of WannaCrypt attacks could emerge as organisations return to work today.

More than 75,000 similar attacks have reportedly happened in 99 countries, with Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan hardest hit, according to the cybersecurity firm Avast. "It's had a massively disruptive effect". England's National Health Service is scrambling to respond to a large cyber attack that has crippled its ability to treat patients, after computer users in the public health system were hit with a pop-up message demanding a ransom for access to their machines.

Hospitals remain key targets as ransomware attacks expected to increase

Microsoft swiftly announced that it had already issued software "patches" to fix those holes, but many users haven't yet installed updates or still use older versions of Windows. "And they're taking advantage of it". "This was not a tool developed by the NSA to hold ransom data", homeland security adviser Bossert said at Monday's White House briefing.

Bossert said the US hasn't ruled out involvement by a foreign government, but that the recent ransom demands suggest a criminal network. Officials said affected computers received a message demanding payment of $300 to unlock data. Some patients have had their appointments cancelled or have been unable to schedule a new appointment. Mr Hunt has come under fire for failing to appear in public since the attack, which hit 47 trusts in England and 13 Scottish health boards.

Meanwhile, to simplify the Windows 10 to match a model similar to the Chrome OS is not that easy of a task. During the Windows 10 S launch event , Microsoft showcased the operating system's superior boot times and increased performance, stating that Windows 10 S can run on less-powerful hardware than standard Windows 10.

Computer security experts fear second wave of 'biggest ransomware attack ever'

Meanwhile Europol's chief told the BBC that that the ransomware was created to allow "infection of one computer to quickly spread across the networks", adding: "That's why we're seeing these numbers increasing all the time". Ryan Kalember, senior vice-president at Proofpoint Inc. which helped stop its spread, said the version without a kill switch could spread but was benign because it contained a flaw that prevented it from taking over computers and demanding ransom to unlock files.
