Seven Pennsylvania brews take top honors at Great American Beer Festival

Now in its 30th year, the Great American festival is the country's largest beer convention and contest, drawing 7,227 entries from 1,752 US breweries.

The brewery at 521 W. Broad St. won silver again in the American-Style Stout category for its Black Cliffs Stout.

The Brewers Association also promotes and protects American craft beer, American craft brewers, and the community of brewing enthusiasts.

Head brewer Jonathan Reeves, inspired by last year's discovery of a 140-year-old British beer brewed for an 1875 Arctic expedition, created Colossal Five specifically to be cellared for 10 if not 100 years. "I am truly grateful for the opportunity to get paid to do what I love to do". After recalculating results with Karl Strauss thrown in, the mid-sized brewery of the year award went to Karl Strauss, which left Fat Head's Brewery with three individual style medals but no overall prize for their business.

In all, 14 San Diego County breweries won 18 medals.

White Street Brewing in Wake Forest won the Triangle's other gold medal, in the Scottish ale category, for its eponymous Scottish Ale.

Bend, Ore. -headquartered 10 Barrel Brewing Co. won gold in the American-Style Stout category for its Power 2 the People (P2P). For 2016, the GABF had 96 beer categories covering 161 different beer styles.

- A North Carolina brewery took home top honors at the Great American Beer Festival held in Boulder, Colorado, on Saturday. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and a symbol of brewing excellence.

Other Illinois winners included Destihl, of Normal, which won silver in Fruited Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer (82 entries) for Saint Dekkera Reserve Sour Framboise, Scratch Brewing in Ava, which won bronze for Oyster Weiss in Experimental Beer (87 entries) and Excel Brewing Co. in Breese, which won bronze for Flash Bang in the American-style Wheat Beer (37 entries).

Sterling, Virginia's Ocelot Brewing, known for its IPAs, took gold for Sunnyside Dweller in the kellerbier or zwickelbier category.
