Huma Abedin Divorcing Anthony Weiner After He Admits To Sexting Underage Girl

"I knew it was morally wrong and unlawful", Weiner told the court, stopping to wipe his brow, sniff and sip water from a bottle. "I apologize to everyone that I have hurt". He said Friday that he has apologized to the girl and has entered "intensive treatment" in the process of understanding the "depths of my sickness".

He has agreed not to contest his prison sentence (which could be as long as 27 months) when he returns to court on September 8.

According to the teen, Weiner, 51, asked her to undress and encouraged her to touch herself and say his name over video chat.

Weiner, once a congressman, then a mayoral candidate, finally just another unworthy husband married to a goddess who is at last (almost) rid of him, has repeatedly exchanged sexually explicit texts and images with a band of women on social media. That bid was ruined when news broke that Weiner, using the alias "Carlos Danger", had sent explicit pictures to an IN woman.

Pleading guilty to the charge, which requires him to register as a sex offender, could bring a sentence of up to 10 years. He appeared in Federal District Court in lower Manhattan as part of a plea deal.

A spokesman for the law firm representing Weiner, Covington & Burling, said he would plead guilty on Friday morning but offered no further details. His lawyer can request leniency at a sentencing scheduled for September 8.

"Weiner's conduct was not only reprehensible, but a federal crime, one for which he is now convicted and will be sentenced", acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon Kim stated.

A court official told PEOPLE Weiner fought through tears as he read a statement in court.

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner pleaded guilty today in NY to a sexting relationship with a Gaston County teenager that may have helped turn the presidential election.

Huma Abedin filed for divorce from Anthony Weiner May 19, the same day the disgraced congressman pleaded guilty in connection with his sexting case. Clinton attributed her loss in the 2016 election to Comey's last minute disclosure. He also sent The Associated Press a letter from the alleged victim's teacher that stated the girl had recanted her claims.

Acting Manhattan US Attorney Joon H Kim praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the special victims' division of the New York City Police Department.

Weiner, 52, stepped down from his congressional seat in 2011 over a sex scandal and was again exposed during his 2013 bid for NY mayor.

Abedin announced her separation from Weiner in August 2016.
