Hanscom Air Force Base evacuates buildings after 'potentially explosive materials' detected

State Police. Sen. Kennedy of MA, the last surviving brother in a political dynasty and one of the most influential senators in history, died Tuesday night at his home on Cape Cod after a year-long struggle with brain cancer.

The base has announced the closure of Vandenberg Gate on Route 2A.

A spokesman for the moving company told WBZ that they are unsure what is going on at the base. Big Foot Moving and Storage CEO Mike Bavuso said the truck only has "household goods".

Police have evacuated part of Hanscom Air Force Base and a bomb squad is on the scene after being alerted to a "potentially suspicious truck" during a routine vehicle inspection at the the front gate, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Police have set up a perimeter 1,500 feet in every direction from the truck.

There are no reports of injuries.

Hanscom Field, a commercial airport adjacent to the base, remained operational.

Hanscom AFB emerged as the Air Force's center for development and acquisition of electronic systems in 1945. The base covers 848 acres and is headquarters to the 66th Air Base group.
