'N.Korean missiles can reach Guam in 14 minutes'

North Korea has threatened to send four Hwasong-12 ballistic missiles over Hiroshima, Shimane and Kochi to target Guam, a US Pacific territory.

President Donald Trump is seeking continued help from China's president in addressing the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear developments.

Guam, a 210-square-mile island, is a USA territory in the Pacific Ocean.

Gov. Eddie Calvo and Guam Homeland Security Advisor George Charfauros on Wednesday noted the defense systems put in place in the region, such as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, missile system permanently stationed at Andersen Air Force Base. They are both managed under Joint Base Marianas.

In addition to the military presence, Guam also relies heavily on tourism to boost its economy, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors drawn to its pristine beaches and luxury resorts in 2016.

Asked Friday if the USA was going to war, he said cryptically, "I think you know the answer to that". The air base was built in 1944, when the US was preparing to send bombers to Japan during World War II. And at the southern end, there's the Naval Base Guam that hosts the Submarine Squadron Fifteen and the USS Frank Cable. It has two 2-mile (3-kilometer) long runways and large fuel and munitions storage facilities. According to the U.S. Department of Defence, Ulchi-Freedom Guardian involves about 40,000 troops, along with civilian South Korean government personnel who train their civil defence responses. Most are sailors and airmen. US allies Japan and South Korea quickly vowed a strong reaction if the North were to follow through.

Guam's total population is 160,000. South Korea, which fought a war with the North that ended in a stalemate in 1953, is highly technologically advanced and analysts estimate it could develop an atomic device within months of deciding to do so.

If U.S. territory is threatened, countermeasures are a no-brainer.

The naval base is an important outpost for US fast-attack submarines that are a key means for gathering intelligence in the region, including the Korean peninsula and the South China Sea where China has been building military bases on man-made islands. It did so to compensate for USA forces diverted from other bases in the Asia-Pacific region to fight in the Middle East.

Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the United States.

It's created to destroy ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight. "No missile is going to land on Guam", Peterson said Thursday. They threatened US, other countries, and they threaten Guam. The Navy used the island as a coaling base and communications station until Japan seized the island on December 10, 1941.

Ri's full statement continues with a caveat, saying that North Korea won't halt its weapons programs, "unless the hostile policy and nuclear threat of the USA against the D.P.R.K. are fundamentally eliminated". Guam was also a refueling and transfer spot for people heading to Southeast Asia, and many refugees fleeing Saigon were evacuated through Guam. Many refugees fleeing Vietnam were evacuated through Guam.
