According to News 18, on 11 August, three wards of Mandsaur - two wards of Shamgar Nagar Panchayat and one ward of Garoth panchayat - had gone to the polls. However, its overall tally declined while that of the Congress improved as compared to previous elections.
Surprisingly, opposition Congress won posts of heads in 15 local bodies, followed by independents in three local bodies.
The BJP chief, however, did not accept the party lost important seats to Congress during polls and reiterated that the Congress was restricted to a few limited areas.
"Not only did our tally increase by nearly 100%, we also won seats in chief minister's bastion Vidisha and state BJP president Nandkumar Singh Chauhan's home turf Burhapnpur", he said, adding defeat of the BJP in Mandsaur suggested farmers were against the party.
The Congress party's magic worked in state's largest district Chhindwara, the Lok Sabha seat of former Union minister and senior party leader Kamal Nath. The rest of the three seats went to independent candidates.
State Election Commissioner R Parshuram said the counting was done at the headquarters of all urban bodies.
The results were celebrated by the victorious candidates until late night. BJP has done well in traditional Congress bastions too.
The party also claimed that it has been able to make inroads into Congress strongholds represented by its leaders Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kantilal Bhuria. The result has come as a boost for the saffron party ahead of Assembly polls in 2018.
