Cleveland Clinic cancels fundraising gala at Mar-a-Lago

The president dissolved two business councils after members who are CEOs began quitting.

The three joined a growing list of nonprofits that have severed ties with the exclusive, Trump-owned resort. The organizations had held their annual events at Mar-a-Lago for a number of years.

The Red Cross provides assistance without discrimination to all people in need, regardless of nationality, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or political opinions, and we must be clear and unequivocal in our defense of that principle.

The American Cancer Society plans to move its 2018 Island of Palm Beach gala from the resort, too.

The gilded and glittering Mar-a-Lago has been a favorite spot for holding charity events and a money maker for the Trump Organization.

The Autism Project of Palm Beach County also said Friday that it is not planning on hosting an event at the club, President Richard Busto told The Post Friday.

The Palm Beach-based foundation said it would host the luncheon at a different location at a later date. The president calls the club "Winter White House".

The proceeds of the Lady in Red Gala are slated to go to "an array of initiatives benefiting military families and military dogs", according to the charity's website.

Cleveland Clinic will not use President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate for a fundraiser next year, giving no explanation in a brief statement issued Thursday.

The Cleveland Clinic, a research hospital with a site in West Palm Beach, was the first to announce a cancellation on Thursday afternoon, suggesting that they might even switch to the nearby Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa. The announcement was reported earlier Thursday by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove was a member of one of those panels created to advise the president on the economy and jobs.

A few hours after the Cleveland Clinic's announcement, the American Cancer Society pulled out.

The nonprofit - which has hosted the annual event at Mar-a-Lago for at least the past decade - has not yet selected another venue. "It has become increasingly clear that the challenge to those values is outweighing other business considerations", the American Cancer Society said in a statement.

The American Red Cross faced pushback in January, when demonstrators rallied outside its annual fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago as the worldwide humanitarian relief organization was offering aid to those affected by Trump's moratorium on the US refugee program.

Trump retained an ownership interest in his business when he took office, which means he has a personal stake in Mar-a-Lago's success.

The health organization last hosted its gala in Trump's Palm Beach club in February of this year.

Meanwhile, some other charities said they do not plan to cancel its events at the club such as the Kravis Center who would continue to have its annual wine auction at the Mar-a-Lago, a report said.

As of now, some nonprofits are staying the course, including West Palm Beach's Kravis Center For The Performing Arts, Big Dog Ranch Rescue (Trump daughter-in-law Lara Trump is the event's chairwoman) and Leaders in Furthering Education, National Enquirer heiress Lois Pope's December 2 shindig.
