Alwar godman Falahari Maharaj arrested on rape charges

Earlier, when the investigating officer reached to interrogate the "Saint" popular as Falahari Baba at his Alwar Ashram, he got himself admitted in the hospital complaining of intestine infection. At the hospital, police got a medical examination of the godman and found his sugar and blood pressure to be normal, the report added.

The arrest comes close on the heels of another self-styled godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, being sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two of her women devotees by a special court that is also trying him in two murder cases.

Falahari Maharaj, also known as the Baba, commands a strong following both in India and overseas. The woman, who is studying law in Jaipur, had said her parents had been his followers for the past few years, PTI reported.

"We have arrested the Baba under Section 376 (rape) and section 506 (criminal intimidation)", Rahul Prakash, Superintendent of Police Alwar, told IANS on phone. According to reports, the victim was assaulted in his "ashram" in August this year.

On the baba's recommendation, she did an internship under a senior lawyer in New Delhi for which she received a stipend of Rs 3,000. The girl had even claimed that she donated her first salary to the godman at the behest of her parents.

Later in night, she was called at his room, where the 70-year-old spiritual guru assaulted the 21-year-old law student.

When she went there, the Godman asked her to stay.

"We have already recorded the statement of the young woman and have taken her to the ashram to identify the room where the crime occurred, and the Baba's disciple who dropped her at the Alwar railway station thereafter on September 21", a police official said.

After getting arrested, baba pleaded before the police that he could not have raped the girl as he was "impotent".
