The five-day rituals start 18 days after Dussehra and the main festival (third day) is celebrated on Wednesday, October 18 in south India this year while the Diwali is celebrated with pomp in north India a day after on Thursday, October 19 this year.

President Donald Trump celebrated Diwali at the White House Oct. 17, lighting a diya amidst an intimate gathering of Indian American members of his administration and prominent community leaders.

Its name originates from "Avali", meaning row, and "Deepa", meaning clay lamps, because of the row of clay lamps Indians light outside their homes.

Indian-American members of the administration, including Nikki Haley, Seema Verma and community leaders also joined Mr Trump in the Diwali Celebration. Daughter Ivanka Trump also joined the President for the occasion.
