The Polestar 1 Coupe Could Cost $177000 To Own Outright

This week, the company showed the first model that will bear its name: the sporty, 600-hp Polestar 1. It's hard not to swoon over the Polestar 1's photogenic body inspired by the curvaceous Volvo Coupe Concept, but the company's subscription model is dividing opinions. Polestar 2 will be the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) from the Volvo Group and will compete against the Tesla model 3. How much that monthly fee will be for the Polestar 1 still hasn't been determined, but based on what Polestar is valuing the coupe at, it could be quite a bit. A 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine drives the front wheels.

Polestar will also offer a new ownership structure. The auto is based on Volvo's Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) however Polestar claims that their engineers have modified nearly 50% of the platform.

As a Flagship auto for Volvo, the S90 Coupe wouldn't have been a huge seller, but it would have signalled the development of the bloodline from the P1800, and made Volvo look cool and forward thinking.

Also helping the Polestar 1 excel on twisty roads, the Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension system fits an electronic valve to each Öhlins shock absorber, monitoring driver inputs and road conditions and making adjustments within two milliseconds to provide precisely tailored suspension performance. Polestar expects that most customers would use the auto in electric mode only for most of the trips. "However, for Polestar, performance is far more holistic than just straight-line speed. That information (that you can not buy a Polestar 1) is incorrect - if you would rather buy the vehicle instead of committing to the subscription plan, you will be able to do that", a post reads on the company's Instagram account. The former is expected to start production by late 2019.

Polestar also announced its plan to launch a mid-sized all-electric SUV named the Polestar 3 after the Polestar 2, completing this way the first phase of the company's product roll out. A maximum of 500 cars will be built per year and all those will be offered on a subscription basis.

Polestar 1 order books are open now, for those that want to reserve a Polestar future right away.
