CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Thomas Davis will retire after the 2018 season, the two-time Pro Bowl selection told NFL.com on Friday.

"For me, the decision was made when I signed the contract extension". He confirmed his decision during an appearance on NFL Network.

Davis and linebacker Luke Kuechly formed one of the best linebacking tandems in the league over the last few seasons. One of the reasons is I want to continue my contractual obligations.

Davis was drafted 14th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Georgia after an All-American career with the Bulldogs. He's started all but three games that he's played for Carolina since the start of the 2006 season, but missed all but nine games from 2009-2011 because he tore his ACL three times. Davis also helped the Panthers to a berth in Super Bowl 50, playing in the game less than two weeks after having surgery on a broken forearm suffered in the NFC Championship Game.

He racked up 76 tackles and 2.5 sacks this past season.

The Panthers were eliminated from postseason play by the New Orleans Saints this year, but they have a squad that could return to the playoffs next year. Over the course of his career Thomas has 1,019 tackles to his credit, along with 28 sacks and 13 interceptions.
