This is the first electoral contest between RJD and Kumar-led Janata Dal (United), which split ways from the Grand Alliance and joined hands with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) a year ago. Alam, who crossed over from JD (U) to Lalu Prasad's party RJD to contest the bypoll, is the son of Taslimuddin.
RJD candidate Suday Yadav led by more than 16,000 votes in Jahanabad over his nearest Janata Dal-United (JD-U) rival Abhiram Sharma.
Meanwhile, RJD supporters have made a long queue in Araria while shouting slogans in favour of party leader Tejaswi Yadav and winning candidate Sarfaraj Alam. Lalu Prasad Yadav's party had won two of three seats that went to bye-elections in Bihar. Counting of votes in the Araria Lok Sabha seat, and Jehanabad and Bhabhua assembly constituencies was scheduled to begin at 8 am. Dynamic security arrangements have been made for counting of votes. Araria and Jehanabad were represented by its lawmakers till they died previous year.
According to election office sources, a total of 28 rounds of counting will take place for results of Araria Lok Sabha seat bypoll necessitated due to demise of RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin.
In Jehanabad, the RJD hopes to retain the Assembly seat that fell vacant after the death of Mundrika Yadav.
This is the first electoral battle in the state since Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who also heads the JD (U), walked out of the alliance with the RJD and the Congress and joined the BJP-led NDA previous year.
