Business on mind, PM Modi embarks on five-day tri-nation European trip

Modi will arrive in Stockholm on April 16 in the afternoon in what will be the first visit of a Prime Minister from India to Sweden in 30 years since Rajiv Gandhi's visit in 1988.

Incidentally, PM Modi is the first prime minister to visit the tribal region of Bijapur in the state, PTI reported. Sweden is a valuable partner in development initiatives of India.

India and Sweden will jointly organize the India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm on 17th April with the Prime Ministers of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.

On April 19 and 20, PM Modi will participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting being hosted by the United Kingdom which will take over as the new Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth from Malta.

The two meetings with Modi will be seen as part of efforts by Britain to emphasise its eagerness to forge closer ties with India, amid growing scepticism and concern about Britain's ability to secure lucrative post-Brexit trade deals.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Subrata Bhattacharjee, Joint Secretary (Central Europe) in the Ministry of External Affairs, said Modi will also have an audience with Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf. After a meeting with industry captains, Modi will hold separate bilateral summits with the other Nordic countries.
