'Predatory' HIV hairdresser Daryll Rowe given life sentence for infecting men

Daryll Rowe, a 27-year-old United Kingdom hairdresser, was sentenced to life in prison for intentionally infecting his Grindr dates with HIV by damaging condoms.

Daryll Rowe, 27, infected five men he had unprotected sex with and sabotaged the condoms of another five in Brighton and Northumberland.

Police added that right from his initial interview with officers, Rowe denied having HIV and denied infecting others.

Delivering sentence, Christine Henson QC said: 'The messages you sent make it crystal clear you knew exactly what you were doing.

After having sex with eight men between October 2015 and February 2016, Rowe went on the run from police and had sex with two more men. My parents died of AIDS and I did everything to prevent contracting HIV. "Oops" and "I'm riddled".

Daryll Rowe was handed a life sentence Wednesday in Brighton, England for his actions.

His victims said after they learned of their conditions they considered suicide, suffering psychological and physical damage.

One victim alleged that Rowe sent crude and cruel text messages to him after they had sex like, "Maybe you have the fever cos I came inside you and I have HIV, lol". "Many of those men were young men in their 20s at the time they had the misfortune to meet you", the judge said.

But noting his concerted effort to continue to offend when on bail, Judge Henson said: Given the facts of this case and your permissive predatory behaviour I can not see when you would no longer be a danger to gay men.

She added: "I note that this sentence is not about stigmatising anyone living with HIV".

But he was convicted of 10 charges - five of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and five of attempting to do so.

During his six-week trial, one man said he felt "pressured" into having sex with the hairdresser.

Before the sentencing, several of Rowe's victims shared impact statements.

Rowe, wearing a grey suit and open-collared white shirt, showed no emotion as statements from nine of his 10 victims were read out.

He said: "Darryl has destroyed my life". She said: "After considering all the aggrevating features and considerable premedation in this case, I sentence you to life inprisonment".

Another said he found condoms with the tops cut off in the bin, and that it had been "a horrendous chapter" in his life.

It's terrifying to think that anyone would commit such a horrific act, essentially forcing individuals to contract a disease against their will - even if living with AIDS nowadays is not a death sentence thanks to advances in fighting the virus. The new me is constantly sad, thinking about how my life changed.

Describing his behaviour as "predatory", Judge Henson said Rowe had "emotionally unstable personality traits" but there was insufficient evidence to diagnose a personality disorder.

The victim said: "As long as he has strength in his body, he will be a risk".

He would tell his victims - who he met on Grindr - that he was free of the virus, and then attempt to use tampered condoms during sex in a bid to infect them.
