HBO's Game of Thrones is closely followed by dystopian sci-fi series The Handmaid's Tale, which gained 20 nominations and won top drama a year ago.

For lead actor drama, the Television Academy nominated Jason Bateman, "Ozark"; Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright, "Westworld"; Matthew Rhys, "The Americans"; and Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia of "This is Us".

Strahovski, who is pregnant and had to hide her baby bump during the filming of season 2, told Vulture of her nomination: "I can't stop smiling, my face hurts ..."

In character: Yvonne plays the villainous character Serena Joy in The Handmaid's Tale. "We are pleased to have these two talented performers join us to announce this year's Emmy nominees and to celebrate television excellence". The streaming service led the nominations in totals by platform with 112. And even some shows that did very well in overall nominations, like HBO's "Game of Thrones", saw some notable stars absent from the final tallies.

In the comedy categories, hip-hop themed FX show "Atlanta" is up against Amazon's (AMZN.O) "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", ABC's (DIS.N) "black-ish", "GLOW", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", quirky comedy "Barry", tech comedy "Silicon Valley" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt".

Also among the nominations: singer John Legend is up for lead actor in a miniseries or movie for his work in "Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert".

NBC will air the annual Emmys ceremony live on both coasts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Monday, Sept. 17.
