Jerome Boateng reveals what he told Jose Mourinho during summer phone call

The Frenchman's future at Old Trafford has been called into question given his fractious relationship with boss Jose Mourinho.

The hit in stature hasn't gone unnoticed either, with Real Madrid and Manchester United showing an interest in him.

Tottenham were heavily linked with the player throughout the summer, while Chelsea were also said to be keen.

After the end of the World Cup in Russian Federation, nothing kept the football world buzzing like club transfers.

Sky sources reported last month the Bayern Munich centre-back spurned a potential move to Old Trafford as he did not feel Manchester United were serious contenders to win the Champions League.

'As a fan, honestly, part of me is that no one is bigger than the club and I am not interested in people who are looking left and right.

"I did not want just to get away from Bayern, but I was thrilled to try a new challenge".

Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld and Leicester City's Harry Maguire are said to have been Mourinho's top picks, but their deals failed to materialize following "financial disagreements" between club officials.

And it seems many United fans already want him to leave the club.

The Mirror reported last month that United held talks with Bayern Munich over a potential £44.5m deal to sign the German World Cup victor following their friendly at the Allianz Arena in early August but once again they failed to get a deal agreed.

He told the Bild that he had "enquiries" from Man United and PSG but opted to remain in Germany because everything was "in place".

"I phoned Jose Mourinho and told him that his interest honoured me and thanked him [for trying so hard to try and bring me to United]".
